If you are not familiar with it: VK (VKontakte) is Russia's largest social network, and VK Video is its video service, a domestic counterpart to YouTube with its own site, apps and short-video format.
Why VK is a special case
Over the past few years VK Video has become a separate platform with its own domain vkvideo.ru, its own app and its own "Save" button. But that button only saves the video inside the app for offline viewing. No file appears in the gallery, and you cannot send it in a messenger or drop it into an edit.
International downloaders built around YouTube support Russian platforms poorly or not at all. That is why hundreds of thousands of people a month search for "download VK video" on Yandex, Russia's main search engine, and the answer is usually a one-page site that lives for a few months. Which links are supported
All the main formats:

If the link has a tail like ?z=video…, leave it: it is what points to the video inside the post. Parameters such as &ref= or &t= can be removed; they are not needed.
Private videos ("friends only" or "by link for selected people") cannot be downloaded. Skachok sees the video the way a logged-out user does: if the video is open to everyone, it will work.
Quality: 720p free, 1080p from Lite
VK serves video as ready MP4 files with sound, without splitting it into separate streams. So no stitching is needed and the download starts immediately: we simply pass the file straight from VK's servers.
The available qualities depend on what the author uploaded: usually 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p and 1080p. Free and without signing up, Skachok serves up to 720p. What to pick for a specific task:
- sending in a messenger — 480p or 720p; the file is small, and on a phone screen the difference from 1080p is invisible;
- archiving or editing — the highest available quality, most often 1080p;
- a lecture, webinar or interview — MP3, if the picture does not matter.
Step by step on a computer
- Open the video on VK or vkvideo.ru. Copy the address from the address bar, or click "…" under the player and choose "Copy link".
- Open the VK page in Skachok and paste the link into the field. Click "Find".
- In a couple of seconds a card appears with a thumbnail and the list of qualities. Pick the one you need, for example 720p.
- Click "Download". On the free plan an 8-second timer runs before the download. The file is saved to the Downloads folder.
The file size is shown next to each quality, so you can estimate in advance how much space it will take.
How to download a VK video on a phone
Copy the link. In the VK app open the video, tap "Share" (the arrow) and choose "Copy link". In VK Video the "Share" button is under the player.
Android. Open Skachok in Chrome or another browser, paste the link, tap "Find", pick a quality and download. The file lands in the Download folder, and the gallery picks it up on its own.
iPhone. Use Safari. The file goes to Files → Downloads. To move it to Photos, open the video in Files, tap "Share" and choose "Save Video".
If you paste the link into the browser built into the VK app, the file may not be saved: such browsers often cripple downloads. Open Skachok in regular Safari or Chrome.
VK Clips and videos from posts
VK Clips are short vertical videos, VK's answer to TikTok. They download the same way as regular videos: copy the clip link (vk.com/clip-…) and paste it. VK clips have no watermark, and the file is served in its original quality.
A video attached to a post can be downloaded by the link to the post itself. If the post has several videos, Skachok shows the first one. To get a specific one, open that video in the player and copy its own link; it appears in the address bar.
Videos from communities download the same way as from personal pages: the only requirement is that the community is public. The service cannot see posts in closed groups.
If you have several videos, paste the links as a batch, one per line. Each gets its own card, and the "Download all videos" button starts them all at once. The limit depends on the plan: free, 3 links at a time; Lite, 5; Pro, 10; Max, 50. Per day, you can make 3 downloads without signing up and 5 on a free account; 20 on Lite, 50 on Pro, 100 on Max. If the video cannot be found
- The video is private. Check whether the link opens in an incognito window without signing in to VK. If not, it cannot be downloaded.
- The link points to a live stream. A running broadcast cannot be downloaded, only its recording after it ends.
- An error on VK's side. The platform sometimes returns temporary errors under heavy load. Wait a minute and try again.
- The link was cut off by a messenger. Copy the address again from VK, not from the chat.

Can I download a VK video by link without signing up?

Why is 1080p not in the list?
If the author uploaded the video in 1080p, that option is in the list, but on the free plan it is shown with a lock: 1080p is available from the Lite plan. If there is no lock and the option is missing, the video on VK itself is no higher than 720p.
Can I download VK Clips?
Yes, via a link of the form vk.com/clip-…. Clips are served without a watermark in their original quality.
Can I download a private VK video?
No. Skachok only works with videos open to everyone. "Friends only" videos are unavailable.
