Downloading a video from Rutube takes a couple of minutes right in the browser: copy the link, paste it into Skachok, pick a quality and get an MP4. No account, no software, no extensions. It works with regular videos, Rutube Shorts and stream recordings, on a phone and on a computer. Below we cover which links work, why a Rutube download takes slightly longer than one from VK, and what to do when a video cannot be found.
Rutube, for those who have never used it, is Russia's largest domestic video platform: a local counterpart to YouTube with films, TV shows, vlogs and live streams.
What you can download from Rutube
Rutube serves video in quality up to 1080p Full HD, and Skachok takes the highest quality the author uploaded. Three types of content are supported:
- regular videos — films, TV shows, vlogs, lectures;
- Rutube Shorts — short vertical clips;
- stream recordings — once the broadcast has ended and appeared in the channel's video list.
A live stream that is still running cannot be downloaded: there is no finished file yet. Wait for it to end, and the recording can be saved like any other video.
Besides the video, you can extract the sound. MP3 is available on paid plans (from Lite at $1.99/mo; 99 ₽ in Russia), which is handy for interviews, podcasts and recorded lectures: the file is several times smaller and plays in any player.
International downloaders rarely support Rutube: the platform is not a priority for them, and such services break after every site update. Which links work
Skachok accepts all the main kinds of Rutube addresses:
rutube.ru/video/abc123…/— the regular video link from the address bar;- the link from the "Share" button under the player or in the app, including Rutube Shorts;
rutube.ru/play/embed/abc123…— the embedded player address, when the video is placed on a third-party site.
A Rutube video ID is a long string of 32 letters and digits, not a short code like YouTube's. Copy the whole link. A tail like ?r=… or &t=… can stay, it does no harm. The most reliable form is the one with /video/ and the ID: if the video opened at a different address, for example from the Shorts feed, put the same ID into rutube.ru/video/…/.
If the video is open in the Rutube app, tap "Share" and choose "Copy link". You get the same rutube.ru/video/… address as in the browser.
Why the download goes through the server
With VK or TikTok, Skachok often serves the file directly: the platform stores a ready MP4, and we simply pass it on to you. Rutube works differently. Video is delivered over HLS: the video is cut into short segments of a few seconds each, and the player loads them one after another. There is no finished file you could download from a single link.
So for Rutube, Skachok starts a server task: it downloads all segments of the chosen quality, stitches them into a single MP4 and only then hands the file over. In the interface this shows up as a progress bar after you click "Download". For a short clip the stitching takes seconds; an hour-long show may need a couple of minutes. When it finishes, the download starts on its own.
This also explains why the service has a queue: the server handles a limited number of tasks at once. Paid plans are processed before free ones, and Max gets queue priority.
Step by step on a computer
- Open the video on Rutube. Copy the address from the address bar, or click "Share" under the player and choose "Copy link".
- Go to the Rutube page in Skachok or the home page. Paste the link into the field and click "Find".
- In a few seconds a card appears with a thumbnail, title and duration. Below it are the quality buttons in the "Video" block and the formats in the "Audio" block.
- Pick a quality, for example 720p, and click "Download". On the free plan an 8-second timer runs first.
- Wait for the progress bar to reach the end. The file is saved to your browser's Downloads folder.
An approximate file size is shown next to each quality, so you can estimate in advance how much space the video will take.
How to download a Rutube video on a phone
The process is the same; only the way you get the link and where the file ends up differ.
Copy the link. In the Rutube app open the video, tap "Share" and choose "Copy link". In a mobile browser just copy the page address.
Android. Open Skachok in Chrome or any other browser, paste the link, tap "Find", pick a quality and download. The file lands in the Download folder, and the gallery picks it up on its own.
iPhone. Use Safari. The file goes to Files → Downloads. To move the video to Photos, open it in Files, tap "Share" and choose "Save Video".
Do not paste the link into the browser built into the Rutube app or a messenger: such browsers often refuse to save files. Open regular Safari or Chrome.
While the server is stitching the file, keep the tab open until the build finishes. If you close it, you will have to start the download again: the server will assemble the file once more, and that counts toward your daily limit.
Quality and plans
Free and without signing up, Skachok serves Rutube video up to 720p, 3 downloads a day (5 on a free account), up to 3 links at a time. For a phone screen or sending in a messenger that is usually enough.
Full HD 1080p unlocks on the Lite plan for $1.99 a month: 20 downloads a day, 5 links at a time, a 3-second timer instead of 8. Pro at $3.99 removes the timer and raises the limit to 50 downloads; Max at $5.99 gives 100 downloads a day and queue priority, which is noticeable on long shows. What to pick for a specific task:
- sending to a friend or watching on a phone — 480p or 720p;
- keeping a film or a show in your archive — 1080p, if the author uploaded it in that quality;
- a lecture, interview or podcast — MP3, if you do not need the picture.

If the video cannot be found
- The stream is still live. Wait for the broadcast to end; the recording will appear on the channel.
- The video was deleted or hidden by the author. Check whether the link opens in an incognito window.
- The link points to a channel or a playlist, not a video. Open the specific video and copy its address.
- The link was cut off by a messenger. Copy the address again from Rutube, not from the chat.
- A temporary platform error. Rutube sometimes returns errors under heavy load. Wait a minute and try again.

Why does a progress bar appear after I click "Download"?
Rutube delivers video in segments over HLS. The Skachok server stitches them into a single MP4, and the progress bar shows how much is done. When the stitching finishes, the file starts downloading by itself.
Can I download Rutube Shorts?
Yes. Copy the clip link via "Share" and paste it like a regular video. If the clip is not found, put its ID into an address of the form rutube.ru/video/…/.
Can I download a live stream?
Only its recording after the broadcast ends. A running stream has no finished file, so it cannot be saved.
