You can download from Rutube to a computer without installing a single program: the browser you already have open is enough, on a desktop PC or a laptop, Windows or Mac. Rutube, Russia's largest domestic video platform, gives viewers no "Download" button, and "Save as" on the player does nothing because the video is served as a stream. What you need
- Any modern browser: Chrome, Yandex Browser, Edge, Firefox, Opera or Safari. Any OS version works, an old Windows 10 laptop included.
- A video link of the form
rutube.ru/video/<id>/. The ID is 32 characters long, so copy the whole address. - Some disk space: an hour-long show in 720p starts at about half a gigabyte.
No VPN is needed for Rutube or Skachok, and no extensions either; below we explain why.
How to download a Rutube video on a computer: step by step
The order is the same in every browser.
- Open the video on rutube.ru and copy the address from the address bar, or click "Share" under the player and choose "Copy link".
- Open the Rutube page on Skachok. Paste the link with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac) or the "Paste" button next to the field.
- Click "Find". A card appears with a preview, title and quality buttons.
- Pick a quality; an approximate file size is shown next to each button. If you only need the sound, the "Audio" block offers MP3 (from the Lite plan).
- Click "Download". On the free plan an 8-second timer runs first, then the server assembles the file and the browser starts the download by itself.

Where the file goes and how to change the folder
The file lands in the browser's default downloads folder: C:\Users\<name>\Downloads on a Windows PC, the Downloads folder in Finder (~/Downloads) on a Mac. The browser's own download list is quickest: Ctrl+J in Chrome, Edge and Yandex Browser, the arrow icon in Safari.
To use a different folder, change the setting once.
- Chrome. Menu → "Settings" → "Downloads" → "Change" next to the location. The same screen has "Ask where to save each file before downloading".
- Yandex Browser. "Settings" → "Tools" → "Downloads": pick a folder or enable "Always ask where to save files".
- Edge. "Settings" → "Downloads" → "Location" → "Change". Below it: "Ask me what to do with each download".
- Safari on Mac. Safari → "Settings" → "General" → "File download location", with an "Ask for each download" option.
Skachok does not store your files: the only copy is wherever the browser put it.
Why Rutube browser extensions do not last
Extensions promising "download from Rutube with one click" appear regularly, and most stop working within weeks. Rutube serves video over HLS: the clip is cut into segments a few seconds long, and an extension has to fetch and stitch them while the platform changes its playlist format from time to time. On top of that, Chrome moved extensions to Manifest V3 and removed the old downloaders; Yandex Browser uses the same catalogue.

The video is embedded on another site
Rutube players are often embedded on news sites and course pages. Skachok needs a link to the video, not to the page around it. How to get it:
- if the corner of the player shows a logo or the video title, clicking it opens the video on rutube.ru;
- right-click the player, choose "Inspect" or "View frame source", find the line containing
rutube.ru/play/embed/and copy that address; - paste the embedded player's address as is: Skachok understands links of the form
rutube.ru/play/embed/<id>.
If nothing helps, put the ID from the embed address into the regular form rutube.ru/video/<id>/: it is the same video.
A whole series or show
Rutube has no "download the whole playlist" button, but Skachok accepts several links at once, so on a PC collect the episode addresses in a text editor and paste them into the field, one per line. The service shows a card for each video, and "Download all videos" starts the batch in the chosen quality.
The batch limit depends on the plan: 3 links free, 5 on Lite, 10 on Pro, 50 on Max. Each file counts as a separate download in the daily limit, so a 12-episode season cannot be collected in one day for free: 3 downloads without an account, 5 on a free account, 50 on Pro, 100 on Max. Quality and file size
Rutube serves video at 1080p at most, and only when the author uploaded it in that quality. Rough file sizes:

Sports and games sit near the upper bound, lectures near the lower one. On a laptop screen 720p is usually indistinguishable from 1080p and takes half the space; for a large TV, take 1080p. If you do not need the picture, download MP3: an hour-long lecture fits into 80–100 MB.
Watching offline: TV, USB stick, tablet
Skachok delivers MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, the most compatible combination there is. It plays on Windows and Mac, on a Smart TV from a USB stick, in a car and on a tablet without extra codecs. How MP4 differs from other containers is explained in a separate article.
Two details. USB sticks are often FAT32, which rejects files over 4 GB: a two-hour film in 1080p may not fit, so format the stick as exFAT or pick 720p. And the file is named after the video title; if an older TV shows the Cyrillic name as garbage, rename it in Latin letters, the video itself plays.

What cannot be downloaded
A live stream in progress cannot be saved: the file does not exist yet, wait for the recording to appear on the channel. Paid subscription-only videos and videos hidden by the author are not supported: there is no open stream to build a file from. Anything above 1080p does not exist on Rutube. A link to a channel or collection will not work either: open the specific video and copy its address.
