Downloading video on an iPhone is harder than on a computer: the file system is hidden, apps are isolated from each other, and YouTube and TikTok do not offer an unrestricted "Save to Gallery" button. Hence the popular but clumsy workarounds: screen recording, "shortcut" apps and shuffling files through a computer. In reality it is simpler. Safari has been able to download files since iOS 13, and together with an online service that is enough to save a clip from YouTube, TikTok or VK in a minute. Here is how, step by step.
What you need
The list is short.
- An iPhone running iOS 13 or later. That is the version where Safari got a download manager.
- The Safari browser. Chrome and other browsers on iPhone can download files too, but Safari gives the most predictable result.
- The video link. Copy it in the platform's app via "Share" → "Copy link".
- A bit of free space: a minute of 720p video weighs roughly 15–25 MB.
Nothing to install. Skachok works in the browser, and no sign-up is needed for the basic features.
How to download video on iPhone: step by step in Safari
The order is the same for every platform; only the first step differs.
- Open the video in the YouTube, TikTok or VK app. Tap "Share" and choose "Copy link". On YouTube the button is under the video, on TikTok it is the arrow on the right, on VK it is in the three-dot menu.
- Open Safari and go to the Skachok home page or the page of the platform you need, for example TikTok.
- Tap the link field and choose "Paste". Or tap the clipboard icon to the right of the field; it does the same thing.
- Tap "Find". Within a few seconds a card appears with a preview and a list of qualities.
- Pick a quality and tap "Download". On the free plan an 8-second timer runs first.
- Safari asks whether to download the file. Confirm. A downloads icon with an arrow appears in the top-right corner.
When the arrow stops moving, the file is in place. All that is left is to find it and, if you like, move it to Photos.
Where the file went and how to move it to Photos
Safari puts downloads into the Files app, in the "Downloads" folder. By default that folder lives in iCloud Drive, but you can change it: "Settings" → "Safari" → "Downloads" → "On My iPhone" (on iOS 18 and later the Safari section sits inside "Apps"). Then the files will not eat into your cloud storage.
To get the video into the gallery:
- Open "Files" → "Downloads" and tap the downloaded file. It opens in the built-in player.
- Tap the "Share" icon (the square with an arrow pointing up).
- Choose "Save Video".
A second later the clip appears in Photos under "Recents". You can delete the original in Files so you do not keep two copies. An even shorter route: in Safari, tap the downloads icon, then the file, and from there go straight to "Share" → "Save Video".
YouTube, TikTok and VK: what is different on each platform
The steps are identical, but each platform has quirks worth knowing.
YouTube. Resolution up to 720p is free; 1080p unlocks with the Lite plan. For an iPhone 1080p is the best choice: the phone screen will not show anything above it, and a 4K file may not play in Photos because of the VP9 codec. If you still need 4K, watch it in VLC. TikTok. The service delivers the original with no watermark and in the source quality. That is better than TikTok's own "Save video" button, which adds the logo and re-compresses the picture. The short vm.tiktok.com link that the app copies works as well.
VK Video. VK is Russia's largest social network, and its video hosting works with links to videos, clips and posts containing video from VK. The file is served straight away as MP4 with no server-side assembly, so the download starts faster than on YouTube. Private "friends only" videos are not available.
If you only need the sound, in all three cases choose MP3 in the "Audio" block. The file lands in Files → Downloads in the same way.
Common problems and fixes
The video opened in Safari's player instead of downloading. This happens with direct file links. Skachok serves the file as a download, so the issue is rare. If it does happen, tap "Share" in the player and choose "Save Video" or "Save to Files".
The downloads icon did not appear. Check whether Safari blocked the download: it sometimes shows a prompt at the bottom of the screen that is easy to miss. Tap "Download" again.
The file is in Files, but "Save Video" is not offered. That usually means Photos does not support the codec. Download the clip in 1080p or 720p instead of 4K.
Not enough space. Downloads in iCloud Drive count toward your cloud quota. Switch the downloads folder to "On My iPhone" in Safari settings, or delete files after moving them to Photos.
The download was slow. On the free plan speed is capped at 1 MB/s. On Lite it is 3 MB/s, on Pro 5 MB/s, on Max there is no cap.
Several videos at once
If you need a whole series of clips, you do not have to repeat the steps for each one. Paste the links into the field one per line; the service recognizes them and shows a card for each. The "Download all videos" button starts the downloads one after another, and Safari asks once for permission to save multiple files. The free plan handles 3 links this way, Lite 5, Pro 10, Max 50. All the files end up in the same "Downloads" folder, and you can move them to Photos in one go: in Files, tap "Select", mark the videos, then "Share" → "Save Video".
Android and computer
