Downloading a Reel from Instagram with the built-in tools is nearly impossible: the "Save" button puts the video into a collection inside the app, and no file appears in your gallery. Yet there are plenty of reasons to keep a Reel: your own video whose original was deleted from your phone, a recipe, an exercise breakdown, a reference for editing. Below is a method that works in the browser without installing anything: copy the link to the Reel, paste it into Skachok and get an MP4 in original quality. It works on iPhone, Android and a computer. We also cover what to do about private accounts.
Why Instagram has no proper "Download" button
Instagram wants you to watch videos inside the app rather than take them anywhere else. So "Save" means "add to bookmarks", not "put a file on my phone". Some public Reels have a "Download" item in the "Share" menu, but it does not appear for every video, and the resulting file has the logo and the author's handle stamped over the picture.
Meanwhile the video itself is stored on Instagram's servers as an ordinary MP4, and that is the very file the player plays. Skachok fetches it by the post link: no watermark, in the quality the feed shows it in.
Old browser extensions and downloaders that once could save Instagram videos break after every site update. An online service is updated on the server side, so you never have to reinstall anything.
Which links work
Skachok accepts links to any Instagram video, not just Reels:
instagram.com/reel/AbCdEf…/: a Reel;instagram.com/p/AbCdEf…/: a feed post with a video;instagram.com/tv/AbCdEf…/: old long-form IGTV videos;instagram.com/username/reel/AbCdEf…/: the same link with the author's name, which the app sometimes gives.
What matters is that the address contains the post code: a set of Latin letters, digits, hyphens and underscores after /reel/ or /p/. A profile link (instagram.com/username/) will not work: it does not say which video you want.
The tail like ?igsh=… or ?utm_source=… that the app appends to the link can stay. The service ignores it.
Step by step: on a phone and on a computer
The guide is the same for every device; only the way you copy the link differs.
- Open the Reel in Instagram. In the app, tap the "Share" arrow and choose "Copy link". In a desktop browser, copy the address from the address bar.
- Open the Instagram page on Skachok or the home page. Paste the link into the field and click "Find".
- In a couple of seconds a card appears with a thumbnail, the caption and quality buttons in the "Video" block. The "Audio" block offers MP3.
- Click "Download". On the free plan an 8-second timer runs before the download, then the file starts downloading.
Instagram video is served directly, with no merging on the server, so there is no processing to wait for. Where the file ends up depends on the device.
Android. The file lands in the Download folder, and the gallery picks it up on its own. If the video is not in the gallery, open it through the Files app and share it to any app.
iPhone. In Safari the file goes to Files → Downloads. To move it to Photos, open the video in Files, tap "Share" and choose "Save Video". After that you can send the Reel to a messenger or upload it to another account.
An important point for iPhone: do not paste the link into the in-app browser of Instagram, the one that opens when you tap a link inside the app. It does not always let you save a file. Copy the link, switch to regular Safari and paste it there.
Quality: what "original" means
Instagram re-encodes every video on upload. Even if the author shot in 4K, the platform compresses the video to 1080p, and often lower, depending on the device and network it was uploaded from. So "original quality" in the case of Instagram means the best variant that exists on the platform's servers, not the camera source.

If you only need the sound, for example the music or the voice from a Reel, choose MP3 in the "Audio" block. Note that Instagram often lays music from its library over the video, and in the file it will already be mixed with the voice. It cannot be obtained as a separate track.
Private accounts
Skachok sees Instagram the way a logged-out user does. If an account is private, the service cannot see its Reels, even if you follow it. The same goes for videos the author has hidden from certain countries and posts visible only to close friends.
There are no workarounds here, and we do not recommend looking for any. Sites that promise to download videos from a private account in exchange for your Instagram login and password do not bypass this restriction. Never enter your Instagram password on third-party sites.
What you can do honestly:
- ask the author for the original: they have it in the app and in their gallery;
- if the Reel is your own, open it in the app, tap "…" and choose save to device: that option exists for your own Reels, although music from the Instagram library may not make it into the file;
- record your screen if you only need a fragment for personal use.
Several Reels at once
Building a collection of references, or saving your own videos before deleting an account? Paste several links, one per line. If the Reel cannot be found
- The account is private. Check whether the link opens in an incognito window without logging in to Instagram. If not, it cannot be downloaded.
- The post was deleted or archived. The author may have removed the video from the profile.
- The link points at a profile or a search page. You need a link to a specific post with
/reel/or/p/in the address. - The link was truncated by a messenger. Copy it again from Instagram.
- Instagram is temporarily returning errors. The platform periodically throttles requests. Wait a couple of minutes and retry.
FAQ
Is it really without a watermark?
Yes. Skachok delivers the same file the Instagram player uses. No logo or author handle is stamped onto it.
Can I download Reels from a private account?
No. The service sees only public posts. Do not enter your Instagram password on sites that promise to bypass this restriction.
Do I need to sign up to download Instagram Reels?
No. Videos up to 720p download without logging in, 3 a day. If you have more Reels or need 1080p, create a free account: the limit rises to 5 a day, and for the first 2 days the Pro plan is active with no payment or card.
Can I download only the music from a Reel?
You can download the audio track of the video as MP3. If music was laid over a voice, both will be in the file together: the platform does not store them separately.
