Downloading a YouTube video in 1080p through the first site you find usually does not work: the quality list stops at 720p, and if 1080p is there, the file arrives without sound. That is not a broken service and not a scam. It is how YouTube delivers video, and there is only one way around it, and it costs server resources. Below we explain where the 720p ceiling comes from, how much 1080p, 2K and 4K files weigh, which plan you need for each resolution and how to check that the file you downloaded is really Full HD.
Where the 720p ceiling comes from
YouTube stores ready-made "video plus audio in one container" files for only two resolutions: 360p and 720p. These are legacy progressive formats kept for compatibility. They can be fetched with a single request, which is why any simple service or browser extension hands out 720p without trouble.
Everything above that is delivered with DASH. Video and audio live as separate streams: each resolution has its own silent video file, and audio comes in several bitrates. The player in your browser stitches them together on the fly. If a service simply passes you the 1080p video stream, you get a file with no sound. That is exactly what happens with "free 1080p" on sites that do not merge the streams.

What a service has to do to deliver 1080p with sound
To hand you a single 1080p MP4, the server has to do four things.
- Download the video stream at the chosen resolution. For a ten-minute clip in 1080p that is roughly 80–300 MB.
- Download the audio stream.
- Merge both into an MP4 container. There is no re-encoding, but the job still takes CPU time and disk space.
- Send the finished file to you and delete it after a while.

The size depends on the bitrate YouTube picked for that particular video, so the numbers are approximate. For a ten-minute video with ordinary motion:

How to download video in 1080p and above: step by step
The procedure is the same for every resolution.
- Copy the video link and open the YouTube page on Skachok.
- Paste the link and click "Find". The service lists every resolution the video has: from 144p up to the maximum the author uploaded.

The plan rule is not limited to YouTube. DASH is specific to that platform, but 1080p on other sites also requires Lite: the server processes more data. VK and TikTok serve 1080p as a ready MP4 with no merging. Rutube, Dzen and OK.ru (three major Russian video platforms) deliver video in HLS fragments, and the server assembles them into a single file. Codecs: why a 4K file may not open
Above 1080p, YouTube more often stores video in VP9 or AV1 rather than H.264. These are modern codecs with better compression, but not every player supports them. An MP4 with VP9 opens fine in VLC, MPV, Chrome, Edge and Android TV sets. The built-in player of older Windows versions and the Photos app on iPhone may show a black screen or refuse to open the file.
The rule is simple: if a 4K file will not play, install VLC or download the same video in 1080p. At 1080p YouTube almost always serves H.264, which opens everywhere.
How to check that you really got 1080p
Some services label a file 1080p when it is actually upscaled from 720p. Checking is easy.
- Windows. Right-click the file, choose Properties, open the Details tab. The Video section shows frame width and height: 1920 × 1080 for Full HD, 3840 × 2160 for 4K.
- macOS. Select the file and press Cmd+I. The frame dimensions are under "More Info".
- VLC. Open the video, then Tools → Codec Information. The codec is listed there too: H.264, VP9 or AV1.
- Phone. Open the video in the gallery and look at the file details, usually through the three-dot menu.
