YouTube Thumbnail Download in HD: Get Any Video's Thumbnail at 1280×720

Download a YouTube thumbnail in full HD from the video URL: which sizes exist, Shorts and live stream thumbnails, why some videos stop at 640×480, and how to use them.

6 min read

A YouTube thumbnail is the picture people see before they click: the cover of the video. You may need it for a playlist, a presentation, a blog post about the video, a design reference, or simply to keep a frame you liked. YouTube does not offer a download button for thumbnails, and taking a screenshot gives you a blurry image with the play button on top. This guide shows how to download a YouTube thumbnail in HD from the video URL, which sizes exist, and what to do with Shorts and live streams.

Which thumbnail sizes YouTube keeps

Every video on YouTube has several versions of its thumbnail, generated when the creator uploads or changes it:

NameSizeExists for
Maximum (maxresdefault)1280×720most videos uploaded in HD
Standard (sddefault)640×480almost all videos
High (hqdefault)480×360every video
Medium (mqdefault)320×180every video

The maximum size is the one you want for anything printed or shown on a big screen. If a video was uploaded in low resolution, or is very old, YouTube may not have the 1280×720 version, and the largest available is 640×480.

How to download a YouTube thumbnail

  1. Copy the video URL: from the browser address bar, or "Share" → "Copy link" in the app.
  2. Open the YouTube thumbnail downloader and paste the link.
  3. Press "Show thumbnail". The images appear at once, straight from YouTube's servers.
  4. Pick a size and press "Download".

It is free, there is no daily limit for YouTube thumbnails, and you do not need an account. If "Download" opens the picture instead of saving it, right-click it and choose "Save image as…"; on a phone, press and hold the image.

Which links work

  • Regular videos: youtube.com/watch?v=…
  • Short links: youtu.be/…
  • Shorts: youtube.com/shorts/…
  • Mobile links: m.youtube.com/watch?v=…
  • Links with a timestamp or playlist parameters

You can paste the URL exactly as you copied it. The tool reads the video ID from it.

Shorts thumbnails

Shorts are vertical videos, but their thumbnails are still stored in the standard landscape sizes. The picture you get is usually a horizontal frame, sometimes with the vertical video in the middle and blurred edges. If you need a vertical cover for a Short, take a frame from the video itself: download the Short and capture the frame you like in any video player. The Shorts downloader saves the video as an MP4.

Live stream thumbnails

A live stream has a thumbnail too, and the tool shows it the same way. During the broadcast YouTube may refresh the image automatically with a frame from the stream, so the thumbnail you download today can differ from the one people see tomorrow. When the stream ends, the creator often replaces it with a custom cover.

Thumbnails of other platforms

Not only YouTube videos have covers. Paste a link to a TikTok, Rutube, VK or another supported video, and the tool finds its cover the same way it finds the video for download. The image opens in a new tab; save it with a right-click or a long press.

What to use a thumbnail for

  • Presentations and lessons: a thumbnail with a link is a neat way to point students to a video.
  • Playlists and catalogues: if you keep a list of videos in a spreadsheet or notes app, thumbnails make it easier to scan.
  • Design references: creators study successful thumbnails for composition, colors and text placement.
  • Your own videos: download your own thumbnail if you lost the original file.

Copyright and fair use

A thumbnail is part of a public video, but it still belongs to its creator. Saving it for personal use, a reference or a private collection is fine. Publishing it in your own article, video or ad needs the author's permission, unless your use is clearly covered by fair use, such as a short review that discusses the video. When in doubt, link to the video instead of reposting its image.

Thumbnail vs. a frame from the video

The thumbnail is often not a frame from the video at all: creators design it separately, with text, faces and bright colors. If you need an exact moment from the video, download the video and take a screenshot from your player. On YouTube itself, pause the video and use your system's screenshot tool, but expect lower quality than a downloaded file in 1080p.

To download the video in full quality, use the YouTube downloader: up to 720p is free, 1080p comes with the Lite plan at $1.99 a month and 4K with Max.

Downloading many thumbnails

The tool shows one video at a time. For a dozen videos, paste the links one by one; YouTube thumbnails load instantly, so it takes seconds per video. For a whole channel, keep a list of video URLs in a text file and work through it.

Why a size says "does not exist"

If the 1280×720 option is marked as unavailable, YouTube never created that size for the video, usually because the original upload was below HD. There is nothing to recover: choose 640×480. Upscaling the smaller image in an editor will not add real detail.
