How to Download a GIF from Twitter (X): Save It as MP4 or Make a Real GIF

Download a GIF from Twitter (X) by post link: why Twitter GIFs are really MP4 videos, how to save them on iPhone, Android and PC, and how to make a real .gif.

6 min read

Twitter, now X, is full of GIFs: reaction loops, memes, sports moments, short animations. But long-pressing a GIF in the app does not offer "Save", and on a computer "Save image as" is missing. The reason surprises most people: a Twitter GIF is not a GIF file at all. This guide explains what X stores, how to download a GIF from Twitter by post link on any device, and how to turn it into a real .gif if you need one.

Why Twitter GIFs are really videos

When someone uploads a GIF to X, the platform converts it to a short, silent MP4 video that loops. MP4 is several times smaller than GIF for the same animation and looks sharper, which is why X does it. So "downloading a Twitter GIF" means downloading that MP4.

How to download a GIF from Twitter on a phone

  1. In the X app, tap the share icon under the post → "Copy link".
  2. Open Skachok in your browser and paste the link.
  3. Tap "Find" and download the MP4 from the Video · MP4 tab.

On iPhone, the file goes to the Files app, in Downloads; open it and tap Share → "Save Video" to put it in Photos. On Android, it appears in the Download folder and in the gallery. GIF downloads are free: 3 a day without an account and 5 with a free account.

On a computer

Open the post on x.com, copy the address from the browser bar, paste it into Skachok and download. The MP4 plays in any browser or player and loops in most of them.

Using the MP4 as a GIF

You often do not need a real GIF:

  • Messengers (WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage) send MP4 loops just like GIFs, and they look better.
  • Slides: PowerPoint and Keynote can set a video to loop and autoplay.
  • Websites: a muted, looping <video> loads faster than a GIF.

Turning the MP4 into a real .gif

Some places only accept .gif files: old forums, certain chat apps, image boards. To convert:

  1. Open a GIF maker that accepts MP4 files (desktop editors and many online converters do).
  2. Load the downloaded MP4 and pick the part you need.
  3. Keep the width modest, around 480 px, and the length short: GIF files grow very fast.
  4. Export as .gif.

Expect the GIF to be 5–10 times larger than the MP4 and slightly grainier: the format only supports 256 colors per frame.

Posts with several GIFs or videos

If a post contains more than one video or GIF, add /video/1, /video/2 and so on to the post link, or open the specific item and copy its link. Paste several links, one per line, to download them in a row: 3 at a time for free, 5 on Lite, 10 on Pro.

Saving GIFs from your own posts

Lost the original of a GIF you posted? Download it from your own post the same way: the MP4 is the version X kept, and you can convert it back to .gif if needed.

Quality

GIFs on X are usually small, often 480 px wide or less, because they were small GIFs before upload. Regular videos go up to 1080p: 720p is free and 1080p comes with the Lite plan at $1.99 a month. More about videos in how to download videos from X.

When the GIF cannot be found

  • The post has an image, not a GIF: X shows still images without the GIF badge.
  • The account is protected: only approved followers see its posts.
  • The post was deleted.
  • The link has tracking parameters: remove everything after the question mark and try again.

Keeping a GIF collection

If you save reaction GIFs regularly, keep them in one folder named by mood ("yes", "facepalm", "applause") so you can find the right one in seconds. On iPhone, create an album in Photos; on Android, a folder in the gallery. Because each file is a small MP4, a hundred reactions take less space than a single minute of HD video.

Reaction GIFs and copyright

Reaction GIFs are shared freely, but they are often cut from films and shows. Using them in conversation is normal; using them in ads or products needs permission from the rights holder.
